Liah Lawson

Sr. Communications & Engagement Associate

Liah is our Senior Communications and Engagement Associate. She is responsible for making sure all of our social media and websites stay on track while also planning events and organizing our coalition partnerships. She also oversees our student cohort ensuring that our youth have a voice in education policy and advocacy.

Prior to joining EdTrust Liah worked for the Spanish Education Ministry as a K-6 English teacher in the Spanish public school system. She was responsible for training on cross-cultural awareness and understanding, as well as helping students to improve their conversational English skills through speaking, listening, and pronunciation. Her time in the classroom further informed her passion for creating a more equitable education environment for both students and educators.

An Atlanta native, Liah holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Virginia’s Frank Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy, where she concentrated in education policy and minored in Indigenous Studies. She is also a QuestBridge alumna and credits the organization with helping make her college dream possible at age 17.

What’s your favorite thing to do outside of work? (Ex. Hobbies, volunteer work)

Outside of work, I enjoy reading and browsing my local bookstores. I also love hiking and spending time in nature, which helps me feel grounded.

What drew you to education?

Education has been the key to my success and sits at the intersection of so many social and economic policies that help promote upward mobility. I found a lot of success through education, and that isn’t an opportunity that most people in similar circumstances have. I want to ensure that every student has access to the same opportunities regardless of their background. I also believe that education is not only about academic growth, but also about building confidence, curiosity, and opportunity, which ultimately drew me to the field.

Why are you passionate about working at Ed Trust?

EdTrust is a phenomenal organization that shares the same core values as I do, prioritizing minoritized populations in succeeding through education. This organization and position are the culmination of all the things I love and have been preparing for my entire career. I have the ability to work with policymakers, educators, students, and community organizers to achieve the same goal of accessible and equitable education access for ALL students.
