Today, the Tennessee House of Representatives adjourned without advancing HB 793, rendering it dead for the 2025 legislative session. The legislation tried to deny enrollment and/or charge tuition to certain immigrant students based on their ability to prove immigration status.
Yesterday, hundreds of Tennesseans gathered at Public Square Park in downtown Nashville before marching to the State Capitol to show their support for public education for all students regardless of race, socioeconomic status, or immigration status.
The decision to dismantle the U.S. Department of Education is a direct threat to the progress we’ve made in ensuring all students in Tennessee—particularly students of color, student from low-income backgrounds, students with disabilities and multilingual learners—have access to a high-quality education.
More than 30 organizations statewide announced the launch of the Education For All Tennessee campaign in response in response to legislation aiming to restrict education based on immigration status.
We must reject policies rooted in exclusion and fear and recommit ourselves to the values that have made Tennessee a leader in education progress.
Governor Lee announced several investments we believe expand education equity and opportunity for students.
