Two bills that could challenge Plyler v. Doe, the landmark Supreme Court ruling guaranteeing every child’s right to a free public education, are advancing in the Tennessee legislature. The Education for All-Tennessee coalition continues to call on legislators to reject these bills.

Withheld Federal Funds Are Harming TN Students

Last week, billions in critical federal education funds — already approved by Congress for Fiscal Year 2025 — were withheld by the U.S. Department of Education. Tennessee Students, Educators and Advocates Defeat Attempt to Kick Kids Out of School Based on their Immigration Status

Today, the Tennessee House of Representatives adjourned without advancing HB 793, rendering it dead for the 2025 legislative session. The legislation tried to deny enrollment and/or charge tuition to certain immigrant students based on their ability to prove immigration status.
